There are 2 basic types of LANC remotes, a standard length type and an extendable length type.
The standard length remote has a 2-foot cable and is connected to the remote and one end and the LED at the other end ,for mounting by the front of your camera.
The extendable length remote has a plug added to the 2-foot cable that allows you to insert an extension cable in the middle - giving you a longer reach to the camera when you use a crane. You can specify the length of extension cable you want. The remote will also work on a tripod without the extension cable, just like a standard length remote.
There are also 2 options in mounting the LED, regardless of which length cable you want.
You can get a removable rubber mount which allows you to take the LED out of the mounting plate for nice and compact storage. The grip is rather good and if you firmly, but gently insert the LED into the rubber mount, it will be quite secure.
Another option for LED mounting is the permanent mount. In this case, the LED is permanently affixed to the plate and is not designed to be removed. I ususally don't recommend this type because when it is not used, you need to pay attention to it's storage. It's not so compact and you need to watch the LED/cable is bent when packing it away. Extensive pressure and bending back and forth can eventually damage the wires inside. That being said, there are some people who do order the permanent mount. Note: if you do remove the LED from the permanent mount, it will not work anymore!

Below is a layout of how the extendable version works. The remote can be used with or without the extension cable.
